Managing Director – China Mr Chan Siu Hung attends the WANO Biennial Conference 2019 in London

On 20-22 October 2019, the Biennial Conference 2019 of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) was held in London. More than 500 senior managers and young leaders in the nuclear power industry from over 30 countries and regions were present at the event. Managing Director – China of CLP Holdings Limited Mr Chan Siu Hung, accompanied by Mr Roger Chen, Senior Director – Nuclear and Mr Ken Cheung, Deputy General Manager of Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company, Ltd. attended the conference.

The theme of this Biennial General Meeting was “30 years of WANO: Generating a Safer Future Together”, and the main subject of discussion was “nuclear leadership”. Participants discussed a range of topics, including economic pressures faced by nuclear operators globally, how to maintain a safe and reliable workforce, and the support required for new entrants and units to start up safely and on time, with the common goal of building a safer nuclear-powered future. In addition, WANO released their analysis of performance trends in the nuclear industry over the last 30 years, and proposed enhancements to the “WANO Member Performance Improvement” scheme, intended to promote greater collaboration among WANO members, optimise WANO support and services, and achieve the ultimate aim of improving performance industry-wide while narrowing performance gaps between members. WANO called upon the frontrunners of the nuclear industry to demonstrate leadership, focus continuously on safety, and maintain high performance in addition to safe operations at nuclear power plants.

The event also reviewed the achievements of WANO in the past 30 years and recognised key individuals who have made significant contributions with a special medal of honour, including former Chairmen, Presidents and Managing Directors. Mr He Yu, CGN Chairman and President of WANO from 2010 to 2011, was among the recipients of the medal. Also, nine individuals were honoured with the eleventh WANO Nuclear Excellence Award that evening, including Mr Su Shengbing, Vice-President of CGN Power Co., and Chairman of Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co. (with CLP equity investment), Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co., and Yangjiang Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.
