Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station

The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station is the first commercial nuclear power station in the Mainland. It is one of the earliest and largest joint venture projects launched under China’s Open Door Policy, and remains one of the most successful.

Daya Bay is located near to Dapeng in Guangdong Province. The site was chosen on the basis that it is technically suitable for a nuclear power station and is close enough to supply power to Hong Kong. The Daya Bay plant has two pressurised water reactor generating units with a total electrical capacity of 1,968MW. Further units have since been constructed on an adjacent site but outside the joint venture with CLP.

Daya Bay produces around 14 billion kWh of electricity per year, of which 70% is imported by CLP to its Hong Kong system. In September 2009, the supply contract between Daya Bay and CLP was extended to 2034.

To ensure that more clean and cost-competitive energy is provided to Hong Kong, Daya Bay has increased its electricity supply to Hong Kong from 70% to around 80% of its sent out from late-2014 to 2023.

Nuclear power has proved to be safe and reliable, and produces virtually no emissions to the environment and no carbon. We believe that continuing nuclear energy programmes will be part of the global effort to address climate change.

The World Association of Nuclear Operators has consistently given favourable assessments of Daya Bay’s management, operation and safety. It is also a frequent winner of awards in the Safety Challenge Competition organized by EDF (Electricite de France).
